  • assembly - What does callq * (%rax) mean? - Stack Overflow
Thus (%rax) means to get the value of the pointer currently stored in %rax What does the star decoration do on that? Does that further dereference that value (thus (%rax) is itself a pointer)? I'm having trouble googling *( assembly syntax This is x64 assembly generated from GCC 4 8 compiling C++ code
  • assembly - How is rax different from eax? - Stack Overflow
The registers starting with r as in rax, rbx, etc, are the 64-bit registers introduced with the AMD64 extension to the existing 32-bit x86 ISA That ISA extension was subsequently adopted by Intel and is often known by the more neutral name x86-64 Essentially all x86 chips released in the last decade from AMD and Intel support this ISA Registers like eax, ebx, etc are the 32-bit registers
  • How to read registers: RAX, RBX, RCX, RDX, RSP. RBP, RSI, RDI in C or . . .
@DavidHeffernan: I just want to read values that are currently in those registers: RAX, RBX, RCX, RDX, RSP RBP, RSI, RDI and print them out, thats it
  • x86 64 - Why is the %rax register used in the assembly for this . . .
@RossRidge given %rax is the go-to register for storing return values, seeing it used in another way is surprising to me It means that reading the disassembled code requires us to mentally map %rax not to the return value, but to just another scratch reg
  • x64: How to do a relative jmp *%rax? - Stack Overflow
I want to encode a 64 bit relative jump to the address stored in %rax in x64 assembly AFAIK, there is no opcode for this, so I calculate the corresponding absolute address for the relative address
  • Assembly registers in 64-bit architecture - Stack Overflow
With the old names all registers remain the same size, just like when x86-16 was extended to x86-32 To access 64-bit integer registers you use the new names with R-prefix such as rax, rbx Register names don't change so you just use the byte registers (a l, bl, cl, dl, ah, bh, ch, dh) for the LSB and MSB of ax, bx, cx, dx like before (How do AX, AH, AL map onto EAX?) There are also 8 new
  • assembly - What does the R stand for in RAX, RBX, RCX, RDX, RSI, RDI . . .
See the question and answer for x86_64 registers rax eax ax al overwriting full register contents as well as Why do most x64 instructions zero the upper part of a 32 bit register which provide some explanation about how the 64 bit register operation differ from the 32 bit register operation
  • assembly - How do AX, AH, AL map onto EAX? - Stack Overflow
RAX is the full 64-bit value, with EAX and its sub-components mapped to the lower 32 bits The upper half of 64-bit registers is only accessible in 64-bit mode, unlike 32-bit registers which can be used in any mode on CPUs that support them
  • What does the mov rax, QWORD PTR fs:0x28 assembly instruction do?
Thanks, from similar instructions I've seen it looks like it simply reads from [fs+0x28] into rax Since fs is 0x0 this should translate to simply 0x28, however when I try to read from 0x28 in GDB I'm not allowed to do this, yet the program itself can execute this instruction Hence it is probably not the correct understanding of what this instruction does?
